Hazardous Materials

Hazardous Materials (HazMat) pose a significant safety challenge. Recognizing, identifying, effective handling, storing, and disposing of such contents remain critical for a successful rescue / clean-up. Maintaining a comprehensive emergency response training program in the event of a HazMat accident becomes crucial for all emergency responders.

ESEC offers the most authentic training grounds for hazardous materials responders, including industrial personnel. It provides students a realistic setting to create a multitude of scenarios such as overturned or over-pressurized tank cars.

For example, a one-ton chlorine cylinder will leak from fusible plugs and a fill valve. Two separate leak sources will enable the student to gain experience in both liquid and gas leak repair. The instructor controls phase changes as the student manipulates the cylinder. Two pipe configurations (trees) will leak from various valves, sprinkler heads, fittings, flanges and penetrations. These range from 1 1/2 inches to 12 inches in diameter. The instructor, in order to furnish the students with many challenging situations, can alter the material flow.

The facility permits “live” responses to be performed in a controlled, low risk environment and includes all the props required by CSTI and the State Fire Marshall for certification plus additional ones to provide a challenge for advanced participants. These will simulate a multitude of situations, and CSTI certified DART HazMat instructors can create an ambitious learning environment for their students. View Hazardous Materials flyer
